It is worth noting that the toll system cameras operate around the clock and record every passage. One of the most common reasons for fines is an incorrectly entered character when purchasing a vignette, so it is always recommended to carefully check the details before finalising payment.

Checking whether an electronic vignette is valid is quick, free and can be done online in a few seconds. All you need is the vehicle’s registration number.

You can also check a vignette through the official portals of the Road Infrastructure Agency (API). In the check form you enter: the vehicle’s registration number and the country of registration.

The system shows whether the vehicle has an active vignette, what type it is (daily, weekend, weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual) and until which date it is valid. Checks can also be made through licensed vignette sales platforms that use API data. When buying a vignette, the vehicle number must be entered exactly as it appears on the registration document, using capital Latin letters (for example CB1234AB). The system does not distinguish between lower and upper case, but it is important not to add spaces or hyphens. Even a single wrong letter or digit is treated as no vignette and is subject to a sanction.

It is important to know that no paper document or sticker is issued – validity is monitored entirely by registration number through the toll system cameras.

Driving on the tolled road network without a valid electronic vignette is an administrative offence under the Roads Act and the latest amendments. When such a violation is established, a compensatory fee is charged (if paid within 14 days of serving the ticket): EUR 46.50 / BGN 90.95.

For heavy goods vehicles, when detected by cameras or mobile teams, the sanction is imposed through a compensatory fee (if stopped by a toll administration team, it may reach a high amount — the so-called “maximum toll fee”).

The fine is sent by post to the owner/user — even if a company or rental car was driven. If the compensatory fee is not paid within 14 days, the full fine plus interest is charged. If the fine is not paid on time, in some cases enforcement proceedings may follow.

The safest way to avoid problems is to check vignette validity regularly, especially before a long trip. When buying, always carefully verify the registration number and the selected period. When you buy a used car and the plate number also needs to be changed, you must get a new vignette as well. A timely check saves not only money, but also unnecessary stress on the road.
