Electronic vignette: validity check and penalties
The electronic vignette is mandatory for passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes on Bulgaria’s tolled republican road network. There is no windscreen sticker – toll cameras read the plate. A missing valid vignette or a plate typo leads to a compensatory fee and possibly a fine. So run a validity check before you travel, not after the ticket.
How to check a vignette online
The check is free and takes seconds. Enter the registration number to see whether an electronic vignette is active, which type it is and until when it is valid.
What you enter
Type the plate exactly as in the registration document, in capital Latin letters, with no spaces or hyphens — for example CB1234AB. One wrong letter is treated as no vignette.
What the result shows
The lookup shows status, period and type: daily (5.30 €), weekend (6.60 €), weekly (10.00 €), monthly (19.90 €), quarterly (35.90 €) or annual (64.50 €). Prices follow the tariff in force from 1 August 2026, published in euro by BGtoll.
What happens without a valid vignette
Driving on the tolled network without an electronic vignette is an administrative offence under the Roads Act. Control is automatic — fixed and mobile cameras operate around the clock.
Compensatory fee in euro
If you pay the compensatory fee within 14 days of the electronic ticket, you avoid the fine. For a passenger car up to 3.5 tonnes the fee is 46.50 €. For a goods vehicle over 3.5 t up to 12 t it is 77.21 €; over 12 t with 2–3 axles — 213.72 €; over 12 t with 4 or more axles — 301.15 €. Amounts follow the current RIA tariff and are shown in euro only.
Fine if you miss the deadline
If the compensatory fee is not paid within 14 days, a passenger car owes a 153.39 € fine. The ticket is posted to the owner or user — even if the car is a company or rental vehicle.
How to avoid a plate error
Before you pay, match the plate to the registration document. After purchase, run another vignette check on Avtovia.bg or on www.avtovia.bg. Buying via https://web.avtovia.bg/?lang=en sends a reminder before expiry. A new plate needs a new vignette.
